He had a shop a 10 Kalverstraat. the 1679 inventory o hisestate included the first long list of Rembrandt etchigns. The simple straight-forward pose, the direct stare and the strong and sparse composition in this etching make it a trylu striking portrait. Some Rembrandt scholars believe that the knee-length format of this ork was inspired by two of the great Venetian portraitists - Titian and Tintoretto.
